First State Ballet Theatre
The First State Ballet Theatre calls the Grand Opera House home. The company began in 2008 with only ten dancers, and it performs full-length works including state and world premieres. Many of the dancers are Delaware natives, such as Sabrina Schultz. She’s from Newark and began dancing with The School of First Ballet Theatre in 2007. Sabrina is in her third season, and audiences may recognize her from her principle role of Kitri in Don Quixote. The ballet’s 2019/2020 season ends on April 5th.
Delaware Symphony Orchestra
For more than a century, the Delaware Symphony has entertained audiences in the Delaware Valley. Originally called the Tankopanikum Orchestra, the first musicians were laborers, doctors, and mill workers by day. Today, the Delaware Symphony is the only professional orchestra in the state. It reaches audiences through its classical and concert chamber series and community education programs. The musicians play everything from the tuba to the harp and perform dozens of shows every year. The current season runs through May 17th.
OperaDelaware first took to the stage in 1945, making it the country’s eleventh oldest professional performing arts company. It stays true to its founding philosophy of “Opera for Everyone” and strives to enrich the cultural lives of patrons within the Mid-Atlantic region. The opera has won numerous awards, and many of its artists have performed at the world’s major houses. Audiences can take in a show through May 3rd.
