Do you want to get up close with nature?
Then head to the Delaware Museum of Natural History.
Just 21-minutes from our Newark, Delaware apartments, it’s the only museum of its type in the state.
The museum features thousands of items, including the second largest collection of birds’ eggs in North America.
This gallery features the only permanent display of dinosaurs in Delaware. One of the highlights includes the tuojiangosaurus. These dinosaurs originated in Asia before crossing over to North America during the Late Jurassic Period. They had very distinctive backplates that were tall, narrow, and triangular.
Hall of Birds
Step into the Hall of Birds to see a wide range of species. A visitor favorite includes the passenger pigeon. It is believed that at one time, these birds made up between 25 to 40 percent of the country’s total bird population. They were known for their gregarious personalities and had graceful flight characteristics.
Larry F. Scott Nature Trail
The Larry F. Scott Nature Trail is a mile-long path that meanders through woodlands and wetlands. Hikers can see an array of animals from the wildlife bind or stop to look for spiders and snakes living in the roots of a fallen tree.
Every season brings a different view to the pollinator garden. It features native plants such as milkweed and purple coneflowers which draw fluttering butterflies and hummingbirds. There are also benches for relaxation.
The museum is open daily and only closes for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
